Grading Policy for Year 11

The grading policy for year 11 students is intended to reflect the standard they are currently working at: Hence a student who may be expected to attain a C grade at the beginning of the year may well start the year at a grade D or E.

As at the end of this academic year students will be graded solely on their examination performance, the grading system in year 11 reflects this and is highly based on tests and past paper performance, although classwork, homework and oral assessment may play a part.

In general the grades will reflect the students current performance as described by the table below :

10
A*/A
9
B/C
8
D
7
E/F
6
G
5
U

By following this policy the Maths Department endeavours to inform both Students and their parents of current progress. Students are reminded that their achievement can be improved by regular attendance of class, good effort in both classwork and homework and bringing the proper equipment (e.g. a scientific calculator) to every class.

The Maths department at the Edron are currently working according to the following policy: This is a working document and as such subject to update and improvement.

Grades for classwork and homework are marked according to marking criteria agreed by the department at the beginning of each academic year. These are shown on a separate sheet. Please note that NGP will generally be recorded as a 5. However there are circumstances where a grade less than 5 may be recorded and these are shown below.

Homeworks and classworks can be graded according to attainment and/or presentation and effort. Each teacher will ensure that a variety of assessments are recorded.

In addition regular testing takes place to assess students grasp of a topic and aid teacher evaluation of the student. Testing is also used to allow teachers to focus their teaching more precisely, ensuring that the best possible mathematical education is provided.

Scoring less than 5 in an assessment

Late Homework
: One mark can be automatically removed for each day that a homework is late (teachers discretion will apply as to acceptable reasons for late submissions) Repeated detentions may be given for late homework as a detention does not mean that the homework does not have to be submitted.

Copying: Copying will result in the work being marked once and the marks being shared out amongst all the students involved. Any student who allows their peers to copy their work can therefore expect to gain a much lower mark than their work deserves. We do recognise that students can, should and do help each other. However, there is a distinct and obvious difference between working together and copying. Only copying will be penalised. Parental support is needed in this matter as copying will only stop when students do not allow their work to be used by others. · Non-submission of Homework: A zero will be entered in the mark book (teachers discretion applies to this matter, but will only apply in extreme circumstances)

Unauthorised absences for tests: zero will be entered in the mark book. This can be avoided by ensuring that a student's tutor has a note for any unavoidable absences (illness etc.) Grades for Testing Years 7 and 8: Test grades will follow a standard distribution reflecting a students performance in relation to the whole year group. Years 9 and 10: The test grade will indicate that students are working towards a specific IGCSE grade:

SEP Grades

The department is aware that SEP grades are an important feature of a Mexican students life and seek to allow students opportunities to improve their attainment grade by including all aspects of assessment in the final grade. However, especially in the earlier years of secondary, a students effort and behaviour is much more important than their overall achievement and we ask parents to concentrate on these grades.

The following chart shows the weighting of each assessment component in the calculation of a SEP grade. It takes into account the need to acknowledge hard work in the class and at home while realising the importance of examination success to older students.

The only exceptions to the above weightings are the final SEP grade, in which the final exam will carry a weight of at least 50%.

Calculation of a SEP

Grade SEP grades are generated as follows: All the grades in a particular category (e.g. homework) are averaged. The three averages are then weighted according to the chart shown above.

This final grade may then be adjusted by a maximum of one grade to reflect any particular circumstances affecting the student during that grade period (e.g. one particularly bad grade affecting the score or family circumstances that are known to be affecting a students general performance in the short term). We do reserve the right to drop the grade by one mark but will only do so under extreme circumstances e.g. a student who consistently submits poor quality work but then puts all effort into the final test.
