Secondary

Structure
The Secondary school at the Edron begins in year 7 and ends with year 11. For our purposes, year 7 is the final year of the Mexican Primary school and year 11 is the first year of Mexican Preparatoria. Therefore, our Secondary school does in fact bridge three areas of the Mexican education system: Primaria in year 7, Secundaria in years 8 to 10 and Preparatoria in year 11. There are 210 students in the school and a teaching staff totalling 24 full time and 7 part time teachers. Added to this we have the support of 5 technicians and 3 secretaries. This ensures a student - teacher ratio which is very low. The Secondary school is subdivided into four faculties; Social Sciences, Arts, Communications and Maths and Science, and i n the Secondary school, students in years 7 to 9 continue to follow both the British and Mexican National Curricula, as they have done in Primary. In certain cases, for example English, the National Curriculum has been modified to suit the specific needs of students who are primarily learning in a second language. In years 10 and 11 students undertake the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), these are examinations set by the University of Cambridge, which are externally marked and are internationally recognised.
We are able to take advantage of a range of facilities. We have a purpose built art studio, a networked computer laboratory and three new science labs. Our school library and computer lab are open for students to use after school. A new gymnasium/indoor arena is planned and our sports facilities are further augmented by the use of a nearby swimming pool/ gym and a local athletics stadium. The school is dedicated to its development plan and is always seeking to improve its facilities.
Each child is assigned to a tutor group, with a form tutor who is responsible for their general well being, both personal and academic. Our Personal and Social Education Programme (PSE), has been running for five years now and it is an intrinsic part of the school curriculum. Fundamental to the PSE course is Camps Week, whereby every student has a week with their tutor group at one of our designated camps. The aim of this week is to strengthen the bond between all members of the group and to enforce the idea that learning does not take place merely within the classroom. Destinations include camps in Catemaco, Veracruz, Valsequillo, Puebla and Oaxaca City. Periodically, students take part in other, subject orientated trips as and when the curriculum dictates- this could include a trip to a museum or a three-day field trip. We now have a flourishing House System whereby every student is a member of one of the four houses; England Scotland, Ireland and Wales. The House System provides an outlet for healthy competition, recognises academic achievement and fosters a sense of belonging and unity. We further recognise and praise effort and attainment in our annual Prize Day. Our overiding philosophy in the Secondary School to bring out the best in every child through motivation and high expectations and to treat everyone as an individual who respects others and who deserves respect in return.
